In today’s world, it is not uncommon for anyone to face an unfortunate incident.

I, too, used to wonder what I would do if I were suddenly involved in an accident.

However, after researching the matter for a couple of days, I gathered all the necessary details regarding FIRs and learned the best online and offline methods for filing one.

Today, I am going to share one of the best methods for filing an FIR, along with all the relevant details, with you.

What is the new rule of FIR and what is it?

FIR, which stands for First Information Report, is an official report record filed by a police officer with your consent.

You can go to the police station or file an online complaint to file an FIR for any cognizable offense like theft, robbery, rape, kidnapping, murder, or cyber fraud, etc.

Section 173 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Samhita (BNSS), 2023, gives you the right to file an FIR. (Section 154 of the CrPC ← Old Criminal law)

New Rules of FIR

The government has introduced new criminal laws, specifically the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.

The BNSS has replaced the old criminal law (CrPC) and introduced new, citizen-friendly rules, such as:

1. FIR Can Be Filed at Any Police Station (Zero FIR) — This means you can file an FIR regardless of your location; the FIR will subsequently be transferred to the appropriate jurisdiction.
2. Online/Electronic FIR Reporting — In today’s digital era, you can file an FIR online for any offense.
3. Free Copy of FIR — If you lodge a complaint, you are entitled to receive a copy of the FIR.
4. Police Cannot Refuse Due to Jurisdiction — If you request to file an FIR, the police cannot refuse to register it on grounds of jurisdiction.
5. Faster and More Citizen-Centric Process — These new criminal laws have been designed to be citizen-centric, ensuring that victims receive justice more quickly.

Top 10 States with Official Police Complaint / e-FIR Portals (2026)

Let me inform you that the process for filing an FIR or complaint varies across states.

That is why I have provided links below to the e-FIR portals of India’s top 10 states:

These state-level complaint websites are interlinked with the national portal, so there is no need to be confused.

What steps are involved in Filing of FIR?

In today’s digital era, filing has become very easy.

You can file using either of these two methods:

• Online method (e-filing)
• Offline method

Online Method (e-FIR)

These are Following steps:

Step 1: Visit the Official Police Portal

First, you need to determine which state you wish to file the FIR or complaint in.

For instance, if you reside in Uttar Pradesh, you would need to register on uppolice.gov.in

For now, I am using the Delhi Police complaint portal (delhipolice.gov.in).

Step 2: Select the Appropriate Service

Upon visiting the website, you will see a list of various services displayed below.

You need to select the most appropriate service from this list:

• Lost Report
• Theft e-FIR
• e-FIR
• Online Complaint (Consumer Complain Process)
• Lost Article Report
• Cyber ​​Crime Complaint
• Citizen Services

For instance, if your phone has been stolen, you should select the “Theft e-FIR” service and proceed to the next step.

I am using “Theft e-FIR” as an example to explain this step-by-step FIR process.

After selecting the service, you will see an interface where you need to click on the “Stolen Report” option.

Step 3: Register or Log In

After the second step, you will see two options on the same page; select the “New User” option.

You will then be directed to another page where you need to fill out the “New User Sign Up Here” form.

In this form, you simply need to complete some basic verification by entering the following details:

• User Name
• E-mail address
• Mobile number
• Password
• Re-Password

After that, complete the reCAPTCHA and click “Sign Up.”

You will return to the previous page, but this time, select “Existing User” to complete the login process.

Step 4: Enter Incident Details

After logging in, you will arrive at the actual FIR registration page, which looks something like this:

On the first page of this form, you need to fill in standard details about the informant, such as name, parentage, gender, country, etc.

On the second page, you must provide details regarding the nature of the incident—such as the type of incident, the number of suspects, vehicles used by the suspects, etc.

On the third page, you will need to enter details about the suspect based on your own observations, such as their height and approximate age.

On the final page, you must provide complete details regarding the stolen property, such as a description of the items.

Step 5: Upload Evidence

If you wish to file an FIR regarding an incident for which you have documents or evidence, you can include them in the complaint.

However, since I do not have any evidence to upload regarding the stolen phone, I can skip this step.

• Transaction receipts

• Proof of identity

Step 6: Submit the Complaint

After sharing all the information and details, you simply need to register the complaint or FIR.

Once registered, you will receive a Complaint Number, Acknowledgement Number, and Reference ID, which you should save.

Offline Method

If you follow the steps I have outlined to file an FIR, you will not face any difficulties.

Step 1: Visit the Nearest Police Station

First, go to the police station nearest to your home or the area where the incident occurred.

Step 2: Explain the Incident Clearly

Describe the incident clearly and transparently, maintaining a cooperative tone.

Step 3: Provide Supporting Documents

Hand over any relevant supporting documents or evidence you possess to the police.

Step 4: Verify the Written Complaint

The police will record the FIR based on your statement and ask you to sign it; ensure you read the details carefully before signing.

Step 5: Obtain a Free Copy of the FIR

Finally, collect a copy of the FIR from the police station and keep it safe.

Once you have filed the complaint, the police will initiate proceedings and work to secure justice for you by investigating the details of the case.
